Top Ten Words/Topics that will make me not want to pick a book up

1: Incest - Disgusting, enough said(and is the reason I won't watch Game of Thrones)

2: Love Triangles - Seriously, when you get down to it, it's cheating plain and simple. Besides, if I have to here about some girl having to choose between two so-called 'hot men' I'm going to tear my hair out. I don't know of any girl that has this problem in real life :P

3: The description in the summary that says "and then she meets a  mysterious hot bad boy who she is inexplicably drawn to"(or something like that) - ENOUGH!

4: Paranormal romance - I miss the days of Buffy the Vampire Slayer and Angel..those were actually GOOD stories!

5: Dystopia filled with teen romancey angst - This stuff is getting old :P

6: Insta-Love - Really, this crap is SOOO dull

7: Erotica - No...just NO

8: Handling rape in a shoddy way(hate that)

9: Sexist/racist/homophobic promoting works

10 - Any story that preaches a set of beliefs to the nth degree or disses a type of belief (I like books that talk about religion and stuff but I don't want them screamed at me- just like not all people of the same political party don't agree on everything, neither do people who believe a certain way- so stop telling me you're version is the only one in existence).

  1. A few of those annoy me too (like the love triangles and "inexplicably drawn to") but sometimes they are done real well especially in older movies. Like Casablanca, one of the greatest films of all time, had a love triangle! Stuff like sexism/racism or incest can be disturbing, but sometimes they are meant to point out aspects of reality so people are more aware....for example one nonfiction book I read called The Freedom Writers Diary had all of those things but the book was written so those kids who went through that could tell their story and help others not feel so alone in struggles.

Anyway, I don't really know what I'm saying...it's literally been yeas since I've been through the fiction aisle of the bookstore or library so I don't even know what's popular nowadays. Is there still a lot of paranormal romance floating around??

    1. If they're done well, then yes, I'm fine with them, it's just they do it a lot in paranormal romance nowadays and it's usually pretty awful(unless it's another genre).

I agree, those topics definitely should be addressed in fiction; I guess what I was meaning was that I don't want to see it done in a shoddy, incorrect way, which I've seen sometimes.

Sadly, that genre(paranormal romance) is still at large, as is so-called dystopias that are mostly just whinny teens moaning how hard it is to choose between two boys(and often the dystopia part is quite silly).

  2. Basically any book where romance is a major plot point. There is nothing wrong with romance in fiction, Star Wars did it perfectly, and other movies have done it as well, however other than the "Princess Bride," which was really more of a comedy, those types of fiction like "Titanic" definitely aren't my thing. :)

    1. I agree, I don't mind romance in fiction, I just don't want it to be the main plot point(unless it's done well). I agree, The Princess Bride was fantastic, I love that movie :D.

  3. I agree with most of these. :P So glad for fan fiction ratings and descriptions and sometimes wish books had them too!

    1. I agree, I wish books had them(since I don't particularly like reading inappropriate scenes).

  4. 2,3, and 5 I completely agree. They annoy the hell out of me. Especially dystopia settings with wangsty teen romance, mixed with a love triangle and all the 'hot mysterious bad boy suddenly falls for main character' stuff.

1, I'm fine with it, but ONLY if it's set in medieval or ancient times, where inbreeding for bloodline purity is allowed.

4, I'm kinda handling it in one of my original fiction drafts. Alhough, it's more of a friendship/partnership than actual romance. Don't worry. Even if it is romance, it's not one of those forbidden love types (well, the word 'forbidden' isn't really the accurate word to describe it), nor it is a love triangle. ;) And my main pairing (not exactly a paranormal romance - it's between the lead and her partner/sidekick) is probably going to be one of those near-endless USTs.
