Books of 2022

How many books read in 2022:

Techinically 101, but one of the books is a edited draft of one of my sister's fantasy books, but it is not yet published, so I couldn't add it to goodreads. On goodreads, it will show 100.

How many fiction and non fiction?:

Most were fiction, but I read four non-fiction. Want to try and read a bit more next year.

Male/Female author ratio?:

I read more female authors this year (I read several books by the same authors, but I only counted each author once).

Favorite book of 2022?:

Leviathan Falls by James S.A. Corey - the perfect ending to an amazing series and I'm so glad I gave this series I shot, I love it so much!

The Last Command by Timothy Zahn - finally finished the Thrawn trilogy and I loved it! The final showdown at the end of this book was just pure awesomeness. Made me LOVE Mara Jade a lot.

Cytonic by Brandon Sanderson - I loved this continuation and Spensa continues to be a favorite character of mine! Also loved M-Bot's character development.

The Galaxy and the Ground Within by Becky Chambers - A moving, encouraging book where people try to be the best and work through their issues.

Sunreach/ReDawn/Evershore by Janci Patterson and Brandon Sanderson

Dark Force Rising by Timothy Zahn

The Mountains Sing by Nguyễn Phan Quế Mai

Star Wars: Rise of the Sith comics by various

Least favorite?:

The Dragon Republic by R.F. Kuang

The Maid by Nita Prose

The Enchanted April by Elizabeth von Armin

Darling Girl by Liz Michalski

and I had mixed feelings on both The Little Paris Bookshop by Nina George and The Wicked Day by Mary Stewart.

A Touch of Darkness by Scarlett St. Clair was pretty goofy, but I had fun reading it and discussing it with my book club people (lots of laughing and a good time), so I can't really say it's a least favorite, even though I gave it two stars.

Newest?:

It looks like it was "I'm Glad My Mom Died" by Jennette McCurdy, as it came out August of this year. Some others were Kaikeyi by Vaishnavi Patel, The Sins of Our Fathers by James S.A. Corey, and The Maid by Nita Prose.

Longest and shortest book titles?:

Tristan Strong Punches a Hole in the Sky by Kwame Mbalia and The Mysterious Benedict Society and the Riddle of Ages by Trenton Lee Stewart for longest title

Shortest titles would be, I believe, Cytonic by Brandon Sanderson and Warcross by Marie Lu

Longest and shortest books?:

Longest is Words of Radiance by Brandon Sanderson at 1087 pages

Shortest is Hard Currency (Star Wars comic) by Randy Stradley that was 4 pages long

How many books from the library?:

I'd say 70 percent (this is a guess) were from the library. I did read some books I own, but not as many as I was wanting to :( That will be a goal for next year.

Sailor Moon by Naoko Takeuchi from Japanese (read five volumes)

The Girl from the Other Side by Nagabe from Japanese (read two volumes)

Blue Flag by Kaito from Japanese (read 1 volume)

Most read author?:

What books are you planning to read in 2023?

SO MANYYYY

I do want to finish both A Lesson in Vengeance by Victoria Lee and Assassin's Apprentice by Robin Hobb, since I've started them but didn't manage to finish them before the end of 2022. I also want to re-read The Fellowship of the Rings by J.R.R. Tolkien

I definitely want to continue my Star Wars EU/Legends read through and I want to make more progress in 2023! So I want to read: continue the X-Wing series and maybe try to finish it (I'll be starting with The Kyrtos Trap, since I've read the first two), read Dark Apprentice and Champions of the Force to finish the Jedi Academy trilogy (as I read book 1 in 2022), I Jedi, Callista trilogy, The Crystal Star, The Black Fleet crisis trilogy, The New Rebellion, Corellian trilogy, The Hand of Thrawn duology, Scourge, Survivor's Quest, re-read the Young Jedi Knights and Junior Jedi Knights series and I would like to at least get to Vector Prime (for New Jedi Order). Bookish Survey by the blogger "The Perpetual Pageturner" - https://www.perpetualpageturner.com/…/8th-annual-end-of-yea…
Number Of Books You Read:

Around 101

Number of Re-Reads:

Zero, cause my audiobook of The Fellowship of the Ring went back to the library :( (I want to listen to the Andy Serkis audiobook for my re-read).
Genre You Read The Most From:

Probably science fiction and fantasy, but I read some of other genres as well.

1. Best Book You Read In 2022?
(If you have to cheat — you can break it down by genre if you want or 2021 release vs. backlist)

Science Fiction: Leviathan Falls, The Last Command, Cytonic, Dark Force Rising, Sunreach/ReDawn/Evershore, The Galaxy and the Ground Within, The Sins of Our Fathers, Rise of the Sith v.1 and v.2, Dark Times omnibuses 1 and 2, Iron Widow, Jedi Search, Light From Uncommon Stars, Crimson Empire 1-3, etc

Fantasy: Words of Radiance, The Last Argument of Kings, Age of Swords, Before They Are Hanged, Age of Myth, The Shadow of Kyoshi/The Rise of Kyoshi, Six Crimson Cranes, The Witch's Heart, Circe, etc

Historical fiction: The Mountains Sing, She Who Became the Sun, Kindred (it's sci-fi, but a lot of it involves history), Kaikeyi, Between Two Fires, Their Eyes Were Watching God, etc

Non-fiction: Know My Name and Say Nothing

Contemporary: The Girl with the Louding Voice and Unpregnant

2. Book You Were Excited About & Thought You Were Going To Love More But Didn’t?

After Atlas started off strong and I was hoping to enjoy it, but the ending really killed it for me. I also was a bit disappointed in Homegoing, but that was more because I wanted to read more about Ghana and less about the US (as I know the history of black people in the US, but I don't know much about Ghana, so I always wanted to go back and learn more about that country and would be bummed when we were in the US). A really major disappointment for me was The Maid, since I'd heard it had a Neurodivergent main character, but yet again it was terribly written.

3. Most surprising (in a good way or bad way) book you read?:

While I had major issues with this book which keep it from being an all time fave, the good parts of The Sword of Kaigen were very impressive and the book managed to get me to cry, which hasn't happened in years.

4. Book You “Pushed” The Most People To Read (And They Did)?:

No one reads my reccommendations :(

5. Best series you started in 2022? Best Sequel of 2022? Best Series Ender of 2022?:

Best series starter: Age of Myth, Iron Widow, and She Who Became the Sun
Best sequel: Cytonic, Before They Are Hanged, and Age of Swords
Best series ender: Leviathan Falls, The Last Command, and The Galaxy and the Ground Within

6. Favorite new author you discovered in 2022?

Definitely want to read more from Michael J. Sullivan, Joe Abercrombie, Xiran Jay Zhao, Silvia Moreno-Garcia, Shelley Parker-Chan, and Elizabeth Lim.

7. Best book from a genre you don’t typically read/was out of your comfort zone?

The Mountains Sing. It's a historical fiction book that takes place in Vietnam and it was SO good. Really loved one of our main characters and I really enjoyed learning more about the history of Vietnam and what the country is like. I also felt like the author handled a lot of topics with care and compassion, which I found impressive.

8. Most action-packed/thrilling/unputdownable book of the year?

Leviathan Falls, The Last Command (that last section), Cytonic, and the three Skyward novellas.

9. Book You Read In 2022. That You Would Be MOST Likely To Re-Read Next Year?:

Not sure, I probably want to focus on either books I haven't read yet or books I haven't read in a while. I do want to finish my re-read of The Fellowship of the Ring.

10. Favorite cover of a book you read in 2022?

Leviathan Falls, The Beauty of Darkness, Six Crimson Cranes, A Magic Steeped in Poison, The Sins of Our Fathers, Stealing Light, The Galaxy and the Ground Within, and Age of Myth.

11. Most memorable character of 2022?

The Expanse characters, Star Wars characters, Skyward characters, etc.

12. Most beautifully written book read in 2022?

She Who Became the Sun, Know My Name, The Witch's Heart, The Wicked Day, Circe, A Desolation Called Peace, and The Beauty of Darkness.

13. Most Thought-Provoking/ Life-Changing Book of 2022?

Leviathan Falls and The Sins of Our Fathers. The Skyward books always speak to me as well, since I highly relate to Spensa. The Sword of Kaigen also made me cry, so it will go here.

14. Book you can’t believe you waited UNTIL 2022 to finally read?:

Peter Pan, Dark Force Rising/The Last Command, Jedi Search, The Eye of the World, In the Hand of the Goddess, and The Girl of Fire and Thorns.

15. Favorite Passage/Quote From A Book You Read In 2022?

“I absolutely believe that people are more good on balance than bad,” he said. “All the wars and all of the cruelty and all of the violence. I’m not looking away from any of that, and I still think there’s something beautiful about being what we are. History is soaked in blood. The future probably will be too. But for every atrocity, there’s a thousand small kindnesses that no one noticed. A hundred people who spent their lives loving and caring for each other. A few moments of real grace.”
-Leviathan Falls by James S.A. Corey

“The stars are still there,” she said. “We’ll find our own way back to them.” - Leviathan Falls by James S.A. Corey

“All people must accept that we have the potential to do terrible things. It is part of seeing our place in the universe, our heritage, and our natures. But in that acceptance we gain strength, for potential can be refused. Any hero who could have been a monster is more heroic for the choices he or she made to walk another road.” - Cytonic by Brandon Sanderson

“I could be afraid, then become courageous. I could be small-minded, then come to understand. I could be selfish. Then move beyond it. I could start as human, then allow myself to become something more.” - Cytonic by Brandon Sanderson

“Get better. Learn to accept that sometimes what you feel isn’t invalid, but that it doesn’t mean you have to act according to those feelings either.” - Cytonic by Brandon Sanderson

“This one choice didn't answer everything for her, not even close. How could it? Life was never a matter of one decision alone. Life was just a bunch of tiny steps, one after another, each a conclusion that lead to a dozen questions more.” - The Galaxy and the Ground Within by Becky Chambers

“Thank you, but I don’t deserve any mercy.” “Of course you don’t. That’s why they call it mercy. If you deserve it, they call it justice.” - The Sins of Our Fathers by James S.A. Corey

“How do you take the fight out of half the population and render them willing slaves? You tell them they're meant to do nothing but serve from the minute they're born. You tell them they're weak. You tell them they're prey. You tell them over and over, until it's the only truth they're capable of living.” - Iron Widow by Xiran Jay Zhao

“I've been told endless lies since I was born. That I was not kind enough, considerate enough, humble enough, honorable enough, pretty enough, pleasing enough. And if I failed to meet the needs of those around me, I did not deserve to live.
Propaganda. All of it. Propaganda to keep me chasing after the approval of others on my bound and broken feet, as if being a good servant is the only thing I should be proud of.” - Iron Widow by Xiran Jay Zhao

“I swear, people cannot make up their minds about who are supposed to be the clueless infants who can’t live without supervision: men or women.” - Iron Widow by Xiran Jay Zhao

“You cannot appease someone into loving or respecting you.” - Iron Widow by Xiran Jay Zhao

“But in a solitary life, there are rare moments when another soul dips near yours, as stars once a year brush the earth. Such a constellation was he to me.” Circe by Madeline Miller

“I thought: I cannot bear this world a moment longer. Then, child, make another.” Circe by Madeline Miller

“It is a common saying that women are delicate creatures, flowers, eggs, anything that may be crushed in a moment's carelessness. If I had ever believed it, I no longer did.” Circe by Madeline Miller

“So many years I had spent as a child sifting his bright features for his thoughts, trying to glimpse among them one that bore my name. But he was a harp with only one string, and the note it played was himself.

“You have always been the worst of my children,” he said. “Be sure to not dishonor me.”

“I have a better idea. I will do as I please, and when you count your children, leave me out.” Circe by Madeline Miller

“They say a witch used to live in these woods, a long long time ago,” she began. And this is what the little girl would tell her children and what they would tell their children long after the ones who came before were gone. “They say an old witch lived in the east, in Iron Wood. And there, she bore the wolves who chase the sun and moon. They say she went to Asgard and was burned three times upon a pyre and three times she was reborn before she fled. They say she loved a man with scarred lips and a sharp tongue; a man who gave her back her heart and more. They say she loved a woman too, a sword-wielding bride of the Gods; as bold as any man and fiercer still. They say she wandered, giving aid to those who needed it most, healing them with potions and spells. They say she stood her ground against the fires of Ragnarok, until the very end, until she was burned a final time. All but her heart reduce to ashes once more. But others say she lives yet.”
- The Witch's Heart by Genevieve Gornichec

“The ending doesn’t matter. What matters is how we get there. To face what’s ahead with as much dignity as we can muster and make the most of the time we have left.” - The Witch's Heart by Genevieve Gornichec

“It’s sort of like coming home … only it isn’t. I’ve never really stood here and just looked at the city like this. The Emperor... I don’t think he ever saw the Imperial City as people and lights." - The Last Command by Timothy Zahn

“Honor is dead. But I'll see what I can do.” - Words of Radiance by Brandon Sanderson

“You sent him to the sky to die, assassin," Kaladin said, Stormlight puffing from his lips, "but the sky and the winds are mine. I claim them, as I now claim your life.” - Words of Radiance by Brandon Sanderson

20. Favorite Book You Read in 2022 From An Author You’ve Read Previously

Leviathan Falls, The Last Command, and Cytonic.

21. Best Book You Read In 2022 That You Read Based SOLELY On A Recommendation From Somebody Else/Peer Pressure/Bookstagram, Etc.:

First Law trilogy, probably.

22. Newest fictional crush from a book you read in 2022?

I guess James Holden?

23. Best 2022 debut you read?

Kaikeyi

24. Best Worldbuilding/Most Vivid Setting You Read This Year?

I always felt like Roshar has really good world building in Stormlight Archive. A Desolation Called Peace has a good world as well. Stealing Light had some cool world building reveals at the end but the beginning was kinda bad.

25. Book That Put A Smile On Your Face/Was The Most FUN To Read?

The Galaxy and the Ground Within :)

26. Book That Made You Cry Or Nearly Cry in 2022?

The Sword of Kaigen made me weep :(

27. Hidden Gem Of The Year?

Between Two Fires and The Galaxy Game

28. Book That Crushed Your Soul?

The Sword of Kaigen, Leviathan Falls, Kindred, etc.

29. Most Unique Book You Read In 2022?

Light from Uncommon Stars

30. Book That Made You The Most Mad (doesn’t necessarily mean you didn’t like it)?

The Dragon Republic. I couldn't stand it. I also didn't like The Enchanted April or Darling Girl or The Maid. But The Dragon Republic was the worst since I HATE Rin so much. She committs genocide and it feels like the author wants us to like her. She is also not even a good villainous lead, in that she screams, cries, and throws a tantrum when someone is mean to her and expects the reader to feel bad for her when I really just want to punch the bitch. I can't stand soggy wet blanket characters who lash out and act all entitled and she is the worst I've come across. I also have issues with how Kuang writes white people, she doesn't seem to write any that aren't evil (looking at all of her work, this is showing to be a pattern).

1. One Book You Didn’t Get To In 2022 But Will Be Your Number 1 Priority in 2023?

A Lesson in Vengeance (which I've started), Assassin's Apprentice (which I'm halfway through), The Fires of Vengeance The Secret History, Fevered Star, and most of the Star Wars EU books.

2. Book You Are Most Anticipating For 2023 (non-debut)?

Defiant, CAUSE YAYYYYYY (last Skyward book). And the new James S.A. Corey book if it comes out in 2023.

3. 2023 Debut You Are Most Anticipating?

Don't know about any debuts yet.

4. Series Ending/A Sequel You Are Most Anticipating in 2023?

Defiant! :)

5. One Thing You Hope To Accomplish Or Do In Your Reading/Blogging Life In 2023?

I want to get father into the Star Wars EU read through (try and get to Vector Prime!), continue finishing series, and continue doing more than one blog post a year.

6. A 2023 Release You’ve Already Read & Recommend To Everyone (if applicable):

Haven't read any (don't get ARCS).
