Unpopular Bookish opinions (versions 1 and 2)

Version 1, created by The Book Archer

1. A Popular Book or series that you didn’t like.

There are a few

I could not stand The Perks of Being a Wallfower when I read it as a kid and I don't think I'd ever like it.

I also can't stand what I've read of the Poppy War trilogy (I've read the first two books) and I do not get the hype for this series.

2. A Popular Book or series that everyone else seems to hate but you love.

A lot of Star Wars Legends content, particularly the Dark Empire comics. A lot of the Star Wars books and comics I love are rated really low on goodreads and I feel like the Dark Empire comics are unfairly hated. They are a little silly, but at least stuff is explained and it has good humor.

3. A Love Triangle where the main character ended up with the person you did NOT want them to end up with (warn ppl for spoilers) OR an OTP that you don’t like.

SPOILERS for the Uglies series

I remember being bummed that Tally ended up with David instead of Zane, cause I liked Zane better.

SPOILERS for Star Wars

I was also bummed about Jaina not ending up with Zekk, but I've come around on Jag now that I'm older.

As for ships I don't like- I don't like Obi-Wan with Satine/Taria/Cody/Anakin/Qui-Gon. NOPE NOPE NOPE. ONLY SIRI

4. A popular book genre that you hardly reach for.

I would say, romance or horror. I have read a handful from both genres, but neither can manage to appeal to me (I'd like romance novels more if they did what a lot of fanfiction does, but I digress).

5. A popular or beloved character that you do not like.

I hate ALL the Disney Wars characters. Particularly Kylo Ren, cause he is a pathetic Jacen Solo rip off.

I also don't like Rin from the Poppy War. She drives me insane and I can't fathom how anyone thinks she is a good person.

I also don't like Kal Skirata or Satine from Star Wars. JUST EWWWWWW. HATE HATE HATE

6. A popular author that you can’t seem to get into.

R.F. Kuang, Tochi Onyebuchi, Helen Huang, Bernard Cornwell, Jane Austen, Robert Heinlein, John Scalzi, etc.

7. A popular book trope that you’re tired of seeing.

Women soldiers/warriors getting raped, the bad boy with the brooding and mysterious past, colonization plot lines are getting old, reinforcing gender roles in how women are depicted, rape constantly being threatened towards women, sci-fi where sexism/racism/homophobia/etc still exists, being told a woman character is a badass but never getting to see it, etc.

8. A popular series that you have no interest in reading.

Game of Thrones, The Warlord Chronicles, The Dark Tower series, Fifty Shades of Gray trilogy, Avalon series (the author is creepy), etc.

9. The saying goes “The book is always better than the movie”, but what movie or T.V. show adaptation do you prefer more than the book?

Shadow and Bone season 2 (well, I like it better than the original trilogy books that I've read, still prefer Six of Crows/Crooked Kingdom)

Nim's Island

Version 2, created by Elliot Brooks

1. A genre “great” you don’t get the hype for:

Stranger in a Strange Land is a sci-fi great I don't get the hype for. I liked the first half well enough, but it went into weirdly sexist territory with the bizarre sex cult and the way female sexuality was depicted.
2. An adaptation you wish was never made

Not an adaption, but I wish Disney Wars hadn't been invented. It's caused a lot of strife in the fandom and I don't like the community overall anymore.
3. A book or series you have to fight back your inner snob, because you kind of think people just don’t get it:

Most Star Wars Legends books (you are sleeping on them DAMMIT), Lancelot, The Expanse, Remembrance of Earth's Past trilogy, etc.

I would also say Blood Heir since, even though I haven't read it yet, the takes on it were asinine.

4. A book or series you’re tired of everyone hating on

Star Wars books (like a lot of people on tumblr have been shitting on Jude Watson's books and it is DUMB. I also think people hate on the Dark Empire comics)

The Ballad of Songbirds and Snakes by Suzanne Collins

These Violent Delights duology by Chloe Gong

And I haven't read this one, but I feel like the book The Black Witch got way too much hate.
5. A book or series everyone thinks is really powerful, but you didn’t connect with

The Fault in Our Stars, The Perks of Being a Wallflower, Riot Baby, The Dragon Republic, etc.
6. A character you don't get the hype for

Kylo Ren, Rey, Ordo, Kal Skirata, Satine, Cody, The Mandolorian, Captain America, etc.
7. A book or series everyone wants an adaptation for, but you don’t

NO MORE DISNEY WARS SHOWS
Also, I don't want The Poppy War or Babel to get adaptions

8. A book or series you think people have bias toward and don’t really love/hate as much as they claim

Babel. People's obsession for it was so over the top.
The Perks of Being a Wallflower (not sure why it was loved so much)
I think the hate of the Legends books is way over the top. Like, so many books have a low average ratings on goodreads. :(

Mid Year Book Freak Out Tag

Mid-Year Book Freak Out Tag.

1. Best Book You've Read So Far in 2023?

(this was a re-read, my third in fact)

(this was also a re-read)

2. Best Sequel You've Read So Far in 2023?

3. New Release You Haven't Read Yet, But Want To?

4. Most Anticipated Release For Second Half of 2023?

5. Biggest Disappointment?

Far too much disregard and hatred towards women in this book. Plus, the horror wasn't even compelling or scary (nor was the descent into insanity convincing in anyway).
Also, Sacagawea was a victim, NOT a traitor.

6. Biggest Surprise?

She WENT there with this and I appreciate it

7. Favourite New Author?

Probably Chirstopher Ruocchio, Robin Hobb, and Heather Fawcett, loved their books! :)

8. Newest Fictional Crush?

I like someone in real life, but if I had to pick, I'd go with Hadrian Marlowe from Empire of Silence. He has a lot of traits I like in a man.

9. Newest Favourite Character?

Emily Wilde and Hadrian Marlowe.

10. Book That Made You Cry?

None have made me cry as of yet

11. Book That Made You Happy?

12. Favourite Book To Movie Adaptation You Saw This Year?

It's a TV show, but season 2 of Shadow and Bone was pretty great!

13. Favourite Review You've Written This Year?

I think they are all ok

14. Most Beautiful Book You Bought So Far This Year?

Maybe my copy of Emily Wilde?

I will say, though, that The Dragon's Promise has the prettiest cover.

15. What Books Do You Need To Read By The End of The Year?
